Full Time permanent Airfield Wildlife Control Operator (AWCO) required at RAF Brize Norton, Oxfordshire

Wildlife, particularly birds, pose a high risk to air safety, especially during critical points of flight, i.e. take-off and landing. The role of the AWCO is to eliminate the presence of birds and other wildlife on the airfield, reducing the risk to all aircraft using the airfield. Birds are naturally attracted to the airfield due to several factors, the primary one being the abundance of food. Armed with a 4x4 SUV, bioacoustics, pyrotechnics and (when all else fails) a shotgun, the AWCO deters the wildlife from settling on the airfield and encourages all bird populations to stay well clear. The entire operation is carried out within the strict guidelines of Natural England, the police and the RAF. All movements and activities are recorded in a log book, with all lethally controlled animals dispatched under licence as a last resort.

Applicants must have no police convictions that would prevent them holding a shotgun and firearms certificate; not be colour blind and hold a full driving licence. A Baseline Personnel Security Standard and a Counter Terrorist check will be carried out on the successful candidate. This position is ideally suited to someone who lives locally to Brize Norton and has an interest in wildlife.

The Full Time Operator follows a shift pattern of 2 days (0800-1800), 2 nights (1800 – 0800) and 4 days off (48 hours per 8 days) giving contracted hours of 43 per week. 25 days holidays p.a.  £18,054 per annum plus benefits.
